The magnificent Madagascan Sunset Moth (
Chrysiridia rhipheus) was first categorized as a butterfly in 1773 by Dru Drury but was later deemed a moth in 1831. It is a day-flying moth and most interestingly, the iridescent parts of the wings which make it so beautiful actually do not contain any pigment; rather, the colors originate from optical interference.
It is highly sought after by collectors and I can obviously see why. This is by far the most dazzling moth I've ever seen. What about you??

Hi Carly,
This is a very interesting idea for a blog. I haven't come across something like this. Thirty million species, you say? Hm, I had no idea that there were that many. I'll tag along and see what I can learn. Ray

Wow The colour in that moth is just stunning. Really enjoyed looking through your blog. Amazing creatures indeed
The pictures are outstanding. I saw a transparent butterfly picture that was emailed last week. That is wild.
Thanks for updating me with your posts.
wow how beautiful. I read once that the tiny specks of dust we get on our fingers when we touch a moth or butterfly are actually minute feathers, each with its own quill and that the front and back of the pattern on the wings is identical isn't that amazing.
This moth featured in our this vs that series of Beauty vs Brains on our blog deBugged. Sadly it fell into beautiful but dumb category...
Just found this blog via blogcatalog - a great way to highlight different animals, and bugs and creepy crawlies in particular!
