Ok so coming from such a brightly colored, beautiful shrimp as the Peacock Mantis Shrimp, you'd probably be thinking it has a sweet demeanor to match its lovely clothing. It's like when you see a supermodel dressed to the nines in designer fashion, you typically wouldn't expect to see her in a boxing match wailing on her opponent until he's dead. Well, unless you're thinking of Tyra Banks, then that shit is not only plausible, but has probably already happened. We already know she's capable of giving a good verbal beatdown.'
Anyways, back to the Peacock Mantis Shrimp. Looks sure are deceiving here because this guy is what's known as a smasher, with club shaped raptorial appendages that it uses to repeatedly smash its prey until it can gain access to the soft tissue for consumption.
It is reported to have a "punch" of over 50mph. The fastest punch of any living animal.
Moral of the story: Tyra Banks and the Peacock Mantis Shrimp should hang out.

That shrimp is gorgeous. I do not think we can find creatures anywhere in the universe more odd than on earth. Well... underwater might as well be another universe for most of us.
The weirdest animals - at least to human eyes - are mostly aquatic [nod].
Not quite the fastest strike though: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-08/uoc--tah081506.php
Mantis shrimp have been known to punch through aquarium walls!
@illisse - that's incredible! I'd be tempted to get one just to watch it try and escape! lol
@Carly:
most specimens won't, you'd have to get a full-grown clubber of around 8-12 inches to really smash glass. even then, you're better off not doing that...they're not called thumb-splitters for nothing.
I've heard comparisons with 22 bullets.
I think similar shrimps use a shockwave to KO prey.They slam their clawtips together creating a super heated(6,000c)bubble,(looks freaky with high speed camera),which collapses instantly,causing an implosive shock wave,which is just as bad as an explosive shockwave.They are also the noisiest thing in the sea,even out doing whales.
the fastest movement in the animal kingdom goes to the "Frogfish".1/5,000th of a sec bite time.
man bear pig
Are they edible?
